A painter who’s so in love with Indonesian batik and longed to convey its heritage, beauty and philosophy through the different stories and journeys of his life with his brush and palette on canvas.
As this book aims to inspire Indonesian artists to express in detail the beauty of Indonesian Batik through the representation of people, animals, landscape and so on.
Many of the paintings on Indonesian batik found in this book were influenced by Orientalism, particularly with regard to representation of characters, landscapes, details of clothing as well as cchiaroscuro lighting, especially on silk.
Born in Jakarta, Dipo Alam was the Cabinet Secretary of the Second United Indonesia Cabinet. Since childhood, he has shown an interest in Indonesian textiles and a talent for painting its ornamental motifs. Following a visit to post-tsunami Aceh in 2005, he felt induced to pick up the art of painting again. He has since exhibited his works on the tsunami in several countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Poland.
Dipo Alam is the founder of the Indonesian Batik Foundation as well as the Dandara Amal Indonesia Foundation. He earned a Bachelor’s degree at the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Sciences of University Indonesia, before taking up a Master’s and then a PhD degree at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, George Washington University, USA.
